It’s hard to find much written about his work, and even less from him. Which seems fine, as explanation would probably cloud it. Assumably, the work prefers being unaccompanied by meaning anyway. Maybe he is still just a stone mason looking to construct well, without the need for a good building-site. Neither a designer nor architect but a former builder as a now artist-as-builder who affords himself the capacity to work slower. Not to think more, but to work through a laboured vagueness without the need to announce ideation.

Ulrich Rückriem makes what he knows how to make: wall reliefs, corner pieces, floor reliefs. They say what they are. When a piece doesn’t know where it sits, it doesn’t pretend. It just sits. No narrative, no claim and without *title.
